I went Into Credit Card Debt Because I Tried to be a Rapper

I want to share my story in the hopes that it might help someone avoid making the same mistakes I did. I went into credit card debt trying to pursue my passion for rapping. It was a dream that consumed me, and I thought that if I just invested enough into music production, marketing, and beats, I would eventually make it big. I mean, who doesn’t want to be a star, right?

The Dream vs. the Reality

When I first dived into the world of rap, everything felt exhilarating. The thrill of writing my own lyrics, recording in studios, and showcasing my talent at open mics made me feel alive. But here's the kicker: the reality of trying to break into the music industry is harsh. It takes so much more than talent. You need money for recording time, promotion, and the right connections. Before I knew it, I was swiping my credit card left and right—thinking I was investing in my future.

I figured, “This is all part of the grind.” I lost track of how much I was spending and why it was necessary. I even convinced myself that once I got my big break, all this debt would be a distant memory. Spoiler alert: that break never came.

Facing the Consequences

Fast forward to now, and it’s a different story. I no longer rap. What once felt like a path to glory has turned into a weighty burden. I’m stuck holding onto credit card debt that feels never-ending. There were nights when I would lie awake, feeling that heavy weight of bad financial decisions pressing down on me. The reality sank in: this wasn't just about a passion—this was about my future.

This experience was a harsh lesson in financial responsibility. I've learned that dreams shouldn't come at the expense of your financial well-being. And as passionate as you might be about your craft, never let ambition blind you to the risks involved.

A Warning to Aspiring Rappers

If you’re thinking about exploring a career in music, heed my advice: Be mindful of your finances. You don’t want to go broke trying to be a rapper or any creator, for that matter. There are smart ways to pursue your dreams without jeopardizing your financial stability. Look for free or low-cost resources in your community. Consider crowdfunding options or even a side hustle that won't drain your finances while you chase your passion.

Your dream is important, but remember, it’s not worth crippling your financial future. There are countless stories of artists who navigated their journey without incurring massive debt—look for them, learn from them.

Moving Forward

Now I’m on a journey to regain my financial freedom. I’ve established a budget, sought professional advice, and am working on a plan to pay off my debt. I might no longer be pursuing my rap career, but I can share this experience to help others.

Chase your dreams, but do so wisely. Don’t let reckless spending silence your future. Stay grounded, stay smart, and keep those dreams alive within a sustainable framework.
