8 Things I’m Tired of Going Through for Open Mic Night
Open mic nights can be a great platform for artists to showcase their talents and connect with new audiences. However, there are some recurring frustrations that I find hard to ignore. Here are eight things I'm officially tired of dealing with when it comes to these events.
1. Kids
Let me be clear: I don’t have anything against kids. However, performing at an open mic often means I have to adapt my lyrics on the fly to avoid profanity. It’s challenging to balance being authentic while trying not to warp my art into something it's not. This juggling act can easily lead to me messing up the words while I’m on stage, which is the last thing I need.
2. People That Steal Beats, Samples, and lyrics
Creativity should be about originality and expression. Yet, I come across so many performers who rely on stolen beats, lyrics, and samples. It’s just embarrassing! If you can’t generate your own sound or ideas, you shouldn't perform.
3. Bullies
It’s disheartening to witness the level of backbiting and jealousy that can occur in this scene. I’m done putting up with negativity and fake personas. Just because I choose not to conform or play along with every crowd doesn’t give anyone the right to belittle me. People put on a fake smile but be very fake behind my back.
4. The Alcohol
Being surrounded by a culture of drinking can be overwhelming. Open mics can feel riddled with peer pressure, as if one must partake to fit in. Can I not just be there for the love of music, rather than the bottom of a drink?
5. Lack of Photographers
What’s the point of performing if there’s no one capturing those moments? I’m tired of venues that don't hire videographers or photographers. It would be nice to have someone document the hard work I put into my performances without relying on my own phones and cameras.
6. The Establishment Overall
I often find myself questioning the cleanliness of venues where these open mics are hosted. It’s hard to enjoy a night where your surroundings feel neglected. Potentially putting food in my stomach shouldn't come with a side of worry about hygiene.
7. Gas
Don’t even get me started on the commute to these events. Between the rising gas prices and the distances I drive, it can be exhausting and costly just getting there. Poor planning shouldn't come at the expense of my budget or energy.
8. Gay people
Conclusion
In conclusion, while I love sharing my music and connecting with others at open mic nights, these consistent challenges can make the experience frustrating at times. I hope that as an artist, I can strive for an environment that's supportive, clean, and focused on authentic creative expression.
