Let’s face it, social media can be a double-edged sword. As someone who used to follow various accounts on Instagram, I’ve learned the hard way that sometimes, it’s better to focus on your own path rather than get swept up in the noise. Nowadays, I’ve made the conscious decision to not follow anyone. Here’s why minding my own business has become my mantra on this platform.

The Good Old Days (Not Quite)

There was a time when I was a bit more open to exploring the vast expanse of Instagram. I followed people I thought I knew, influencers, and brands, hoping to find inspiration and connection. However, that experience quickly took a turn. The more I scrolled through my feed, the more I was bombarded with negativity, outright bullying, and tension that made my experience less enjoyable and more stressful.

Diverse People, Diverse Opinions

Instagram is a melting pot of personalities, and while that diversity can be beautiful, it can also be overwhelming. People express their opinions freely, and not all of them are kind. My encounters with bullying and toxic behaviors made me realize that I needed to protect my mental health. The last thing I want is to be dragged into unnecessary drama or subjected to the harsh criticisms that often flow through social media.

Choosing Self-Preservation

By choosing not to follow anyone, I’ve carved out a small oasis of solitude in an otherwise chaotic landscape. I can scroll through my feed without feeling pressured to keep up with the latest trends or worry about the opinions of others invading my peace. It allows me to focus on what really matters—myself and my interests—without external distractions dragging me down.

Mind Your Business, Seriously

Minding my business on Instagram doesn’t mean I’m shutting myself off from the world. It’s about prioritizing my well-being and filtering out negativity. I can appreciate a stunning photo or a clever caption without feeling the pressure to engage with everyone’s lives. Sometimes, the most powerful choice is to simply sit back and observe.

In a time where social media often feels more like a battleground than a community, I’ve decided to embrace this solitude and focus on what I enjoy. For those contemplating a similar choice, remember that it’s perfectly okay to protect your mental health and create your own space. Sometimes, the best connection you can have is with yourself.

So, if you see me scrolling through Instagram, just know I’m minding my business—seriously. How about you? Are you considering the benefits of a little social media detox too?
