Why I Stopped Burning Candles

It’s been a full six months since I last lit a candle—a practice that was once a daily ritual in my faith as part of my devotion to Santa Muerte. For many, the act of burning candles can be a powerful symbol of prayer, hope, and connection to the divine. However, my decision to halt this ritual hasn’t brought about any noticeable changes in my life, and I feel it's time to explain why I’ve chosen to step away from this practice.

For years, lighting candles was a sacred part of my routine, a daily homage to Santa Muerte. Each flame represented a prayer, a request for guidance, or an offering of gratitude. The flicker of the candlelight created an ambiance of tranquility and focus, drawing me into a deeper connection with my spirituality. Yet, as I reflected on my journey over the past months, it became clear that the significance I once attached to this ritual was shifting.

My decision to stop burning candles was not made lightly. It stemmed from a profound evaluation of my spiritual needs and beliefs. In the beginning, the act of lighting a candle served as a reminder of my devotion and an anchor for my prayers. But over time, I realized that my spiritual connection does not solely depend on rituals or physical offerings.

The absence of candles in my daily life hasn't led to any feelings of loss or disconnection. If anything, I've discovered new ways to connect with my faith and express my spirituality that go beyond the solitary act of candle lighting. I've embraced a more internal approach, focusing on mindfulness and reflection as paths to understanding and growth. Often, the essence of spirituality lies not in rituals but in how you live your life day by day.

That being said, I remain open to the idea of returning to candle burning if necessary. Emergencies can call for different expressions of faith or a desire for heightened connection during trying times. However, the choice to engage in such rituals will now come from genuine need rather than a feeling of obligation.

Ultimately, stepping away from burning candles has been a personal journey toward understanding what spirituality means to me at this moment. It’s not about abandoning my faith, but rather evolving it into something that feels more aligned with who I am today. The absence of a candle’s glow doesn't diminish the light of my beliefs; it merely reflects a transformation in how I choose to express them.

In the end, spirituality is a deeply personal journey, and it’s essential to define it in whatever way resonates most with your individual experiences. For now, I find peace in silence, reflection, and the myriad ways I can honor my beliefs beyond the flicker of a flame.
